Grounding Exercise

Sitting on a chair with your spine straight, visualize a rope descending from the tail of your spine. See it go through the floor, down through the earth, then the layers of rock, until you feel that you are near the center of the earth, then anchor the rope there. You can also visualize your body going through the earth with the rope and, having anchored it, come back to your sitting position.

Now imagine that there are two holes in the bottom of your feet and that a heavy brownish-red warm sludge is coming up through these holes and circulating throughout your lower body. Do this until your lower body feels heavier. Then visualize a distant point in the heavens from which a beam of white light is coming down to connect with a point on the crown of your head. Feel the white light flow through this point into your head and through the upper part of your body, cleansing it and making it feel lighter.

Now feel the two different energies circulating at the same time and finish the exercise by touching the floor with your hands to allow any excess energy to return to the earth. This exercise takes only a few minutes to do.

As with all visualization exercises, don't become obsessed with trying to see everything clearly - forming the idea in your mind is enough to make it work.

Treatment Tips

Make sure that the environment in which you give Reiki treatments is warm, well aired and relaxing.

Ideally, use a massage table to give Reiki treatments but you could use a firm bed or a duvet placed on the floor.

Remove any jewellery you are wearing such as rings, bracelets and watch.

Always wash your hands immediately before and after each treatment.

Grounding exercises can be useful as a preparation for giving a Reiki treatment.

You could rub a few drops of rose oil or other oil of your choice on your hands before giving a treatment.

Try playing soothing music quietly in the background to help create a relaxing environment.

Sit quietly for a few minutes before your client arrives to clear your mind. You dould even give yourself Reiki to the heart and solar plexus areas.

Contraindications for Reiki

I would recommend extreme caution if you are asked to treat someone with a pacemaker. The effect of Reiki energy on such a device can be very unpredictable.

Extreme care should be taken when treating anyone who suffers from diabetes. Reiki can affect the levels of insulin required by the body. You will need to warn the recipient that if they wish to receive Reiki, they will need to monitor their insulin levels very closely.

Care should be taken during all stages of pregnancy with the use of essential oils on pressure points.

It is important to remember that while it is safe to give Reiki to babies and children, they do not need to receive Reiki for as long as an adult. Twenty to thirty minutes should be adequate for a full body treatment.

Do not attempt to give or receive Reiki after drinking alcohol as it may cause some unpleasant side effects.

Do not give Reiki to broken bones before the site of the break has been set in plaster. Otherwise there is a real chance that the bone may start to knit at an incorrect angle.

Reiki Natural Healing

Reiki (ray-key) is a Japanese word for Universal Life Force and a system of natural healing that channels Reiki through the hands. It is known by many names.

The traditional Asian medical paradigm views injury, dysfunction and disease as manifesting when subtle energies are weak, distorted or out-of-balance. Tai Chi, Acupuncture, Homeopathy, Hatha Yoga, Shiatsu, Polarity, Macrobiotics, Radionics, and herbal remedies are means of optimizing subtle auric and internal energies.

Reiki accesses the source of Life to heal the self and others on spiritual, mental, emotional and physical levels. Reiki allows the source of well-being to enhance and balance natural life forces through non-intrusive therapeutic touch. Health maintenance, pain relief, mental quietude and healing result from its application.

Reiki augments and accelerates the healing process. It can be effective in cases that do not respond to other forms of treatment. It can be used in conjunction with any other therapeutic modality. Creative energy is the essence of all healing. Dr. Albert Schweitzer said, "We physicians do nothing, we only help and encourage the
physician within."

Reiki is a spiritual power that came with the Buddha's enlightenment. He gave that gift to his students along with meditation techniques which were the means of his self-realization.

In the late 1800's a specific formula for accessing Universal Life Force was discovered in some Sanskrit sutras found in a Kyoto zendo by a scholar seeking knowledge of what the Buddha taught about healing. Mikao Usui was contemplating what he had learned when he received a transcendental initiation, the results of which were the abilities of healing by laying on of the hands and of sending healing over distance. Much later he realized that the experience of God is more essential to fulfillment of the purpose of life than the power of healing.

Reiki is an essence which comes from the Source of Life itself. Since Reiki is multi-dimensional it can be a catalytic factor in personal evolution no matter what beliefs are held. The experience of Reiki is a vehicle to becoming conscious of your own being regardless of faith or concepts.

The innate ability to channel healing energy through the hands is awakened through a series of direct transmission initiations which attune and align energy centers in the body and hands. Reiki is not a system of religious beliefs. The world does not need another. Anyone can learn Reiki; it is very simple.

Reiki:
  • relieves stress and pain.
  • relaxes muscle spasms.
  • releases emotional blockages.
  • accelerates natural healing.
  • stimulates the immune system.
  • balances subtle body energies.
  • is beyond belief.
  • can be used in conjunction with any other therapeutic modality.
  • is effective on chronic and acute illness or injury.
  • can be learned by anyone.
  • uses laying on of the hands.
  • can be sent over any distance.
  • is a means of sharing love.
  • is completely safe and benign.
  • protects the practitioner.
  • is Universal Life Force.

Prayer of Fra Giovanni

There is nothing I can give you which you do not have, but there is much that while I cannot give it, you can take.

No Heaven can come to us unless our hearts find rest in it today. Take Heaven.

No Peace lies in our future which is not hidden in this present instant. Take Peace.

The gloom of the world is but a shadow, behind it, yet within reach is joy, there is radiance and glory in the darkness could we but see and to see we have only to look. I beseech you to look.

Life is so generous a giver, but we, judging its gifts by their covering cast them away as ugly or heavy or hard. Remove the covering and you will find beneath a living splendor woven of love, by wisdom with power.

Welcome it, grasp it, and you touch the angel’s hand that brings it to you.

Everything we call a trial, a sorrow or a duty, the angel’s hand is there, the gift is there and the wonder of an over-shadowing presence.

Our joys too be not content with them as joys. They too conceal diviner gifts.

And so at this time I greet you, not quite as the world sends greetings, but with profound esteem and the prayer that for you, now and forever, the day breaks, the shadows flee away.

Points to Ponder

One day in 1991 my Highest-Self gave me a series of lessons and Truths which
really didn't mean much to me at the time. Today I saw them again and had many revelations. Here they are for you to ponder too. Enjoy!
  • Remember: Discipline - monitor your thoughts, words, emotions and actions.
  • Harmony in your life is a gauge of the effectiveness of your work.
  • If things are not harmonous or working, look to your thoughts, words, emotions and actions.
  • Put nothing outside of yourself. You create your reality totally.
  • Forget all you have learned in this life.
  • Strive to be the best you can be - for you.
  • Know thyself - be who you are rather than who others perceive you to be or what they tell you to be.
  • Have Faith - know what you think will affect your life.
  • Words can heal or harm; create or destroy.
  • Everything (thoughts, words, emotions, places, songs, etc.) has a vibration. It will either resonate to harmony or discord within you. That which is discordant move away from or change your perception of it.
  • All in life is learned perception - change your mind, change your perception. Coming to a new level of understanding, changes your perception.
  • There is nothing wrong or bad in the Universe - only your perception of it. What appears bad to someone may be a wonderful blessing to another.
  • Only you can be responsible for you - take charge of your life.
  • Your biggest opportunity/challenge, is your soul's loving way of getting you to change your mind. It's like a joke. How loving or peaceful or joyfilled did you think you were - the challenge is humbling, the more pompus your position the bigger the challenge, but it is only perceived. The True challenge is to be fully who you are, in all situations, 100% of the time.
  • Honor others by listening and responding when asked. Everyone has their own level of reality and understanding, offer yours only when asked, otherwise it may be an intrusion.
  • Be loving and compassionate in all things - simply by allowing the fullness of Love and Compassion (which you Truly are) to flow through you.

Life Creed

To be alone, but not lonely.
To desire, instead of crave.
To do with or without, with no effect/reaction.
To give freely, and expect nothing in return.
To do, for the sake of doing.
To stop searching, only listen to our small quiet voice.
To not question everything, just to feel and Know.
To be Now, not in past or future.
To live life with Joy and Love.
To trust and love the self, and show your Truth and Love to all the world.

Do All Healers Use Reiki?

All healers use life force or Ki, but not all use Reiki. Reiki is a special kind of life force that can only be channeled by someone that has been attuned to it. It is possible that some people are born with Reiki or have gotten it some other way. However, most healers who have not received the Reiki attunement from a Reiki Master are not using Reiki but another kind of life force. People who already do healing work consistently report an increase of at least fifty percent in the strength of their healing energies after taking the Reiki training.

This was verified for me when I first began teaching Reiki. There were two clairvoyant healers I knew who had highly developed abilities. They could easily see the life force flowing through a person's body, as well as see the aura and chakras. They could also communicate with a person's guides and Higher Self. They were adept at moving negative psychic energy out of the body as well as channeling healing energies. In my twenty years of metaphysical work, they were the most accurate and effective psychic healers I had met.

They told me later they had doubted there was anything I was teaching they couldn't already do, but that they took the Reiki training anyway, simply to support me in my new work. After the attunement, they were amazed at the difference they could feel between the healing energies they had been using and Reiki. They said the Reiki energies were more powerful and of a much higher frequency. They noted also that Reiki didn't have to be guided like the other healing energies they were using, and that the Reiki energies began flowing without having to enter an altered state. They also indicated the attunement process itself was a powerful healing experience, releasing restrictions relating to their healing work they had unknowingly acquired when they were healers in past lives. They were very pleased they had taken the class.

Reiki: The Healing Touch

Can Reiki cause harm?

Reiki can never cause harm. Because Reiki is guided by the God-consciousness, it can never do harm. It always knows what a person needs and will adjust itself to create the effect that is appropriate for them. One never need worry about whether to give Reiki or not. It is always helpful.

In addition, because the practitioner does not direct the healing and does not decide what to work on, or what to heal, the practitioner is not in danger of taking on the karma of the client. Because the practitioner is not doing the healing, it is also much easier for the ego to stay out of the way and allow the presence of God to clearly shine through.

~Reiki: The Healing Touch

Reiki Energy is Never Depleted

Because it is a channeled healing, the Reiki practitioner's energies are never depleted. In fact, the Reiki consciousness considers both practitioner and client to be in need of healing, so both receive treatment. Because of this, giving a treatment always increases one's energy and leaves one surrounded with loving feelings of well-being.

Reiki: The Healing Touch

What Is Reiki?

The knowledge that an unseen energy flows through all living things and is connected directly to the quality of health has been part of the wisdom of many cultures since ancient times. The existence of this "life force energy" has been verified by recent scientific experiments, and medical doctors are considering the role it plays in the functioning of the immune system and the healing process.

Reiki is a technique for stress reduction and relaxation that allows everyone to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve health and enhance the quality of life.

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student by the Reiki Master. Its use is not dependent on ones intellectual capacity or spiritual development and, therefore, is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through you and surrounds you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit and creates many beneficial effects including relaxation and feelings of peace, security, and well-being. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural, and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use.

~International Center for Reiki Training

Is Reiki a Religion?

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, for optimum well being in the light of Eastern medical theory that we are a mind-body-spirit unity, it is necessary to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Dr. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

26 Rules For Living Well

1.All Are Related:
There is a Native American saying, which translates roughly to "All are Related". Everything in the universe is part of The Great Spirit, from a rock, to a plant, to a fish, to a human. The spirit flows between and within us all, and is the building block of everything. Since we are all part of the same whole, we should treat the rest of the whole as if it is part of us, i.e. with compassion and love. We are all part of the Great Spirit, just like all the different leaves on a tree are still part of the tree.

2.The Energy Flow:
The universe is composed of energy. This energy flows between everything, us and within us all. When we have internal blocks, the energy fails to flow correctly, causing illness, lethargy and other symptoms. This energy can be directed consciously, we can see it, and feel it. How we feel affects our energy levels; negativity drains energy, positivity creates energy.

3.We Are Beings of Both Spirit and Flesh:
We are spirits, but at the same time, we are creatures of the flesh. We inhabit both worlds simultaneously, even though we are often unaware of it. We should not shun the flesh for spirit or vice versa. Both are equally important. We have to walk with one foot in each of these worlds, and pay them both attention. Neglecting either world causes distress in the other.

4.No One Entity is Superior to Another:
No one being or creature is any better or greater than another. We are all the same. We are all on different paths and have different levels of understanding, but that does not make any one of us better than another. Humans are not masters of nature, nor the animals and plants. They are our companions, and co-inhabitants of this planet. We are not superior to them, nor do we own them. We should treat them all with respect.

5.Belief Creates:
How we perceive the universe is shaped by our beliefs. If we believe we are in a hurry, then everyone else appears to be going slow. Through belief and positive thought, we can create virtually anything. We should believe in our abilities and ourselves, and we will succeed. We can combine the power of belief with that of visualisation to bring anything into reality.

6.Intuition:
Inside of us, a voice speaks and guides us. It is our intuition. We can choose to ignore it or to listen to it. Once we are in tune with our intuition and start to listen to it, we will be guided and will find that we can achieve more than we thought possible. We will begin to realise that the Great Spirit works through us - often in mysterious ways, but always to our benefit - in the long term.

7.The Higher Purpose:
Everything that happens is for a reason and for the greater good. We have to learn to look at events in our lives from more than just the normal human perspective. We must see them from the perspective of the Great Spirit and to look at what good will come from these events. This is the old maxim of "is the glass half full or half empty". We can look at events badly, half empty, and our reaction will be worse. However, should we look at events better, i.e. half full, then we are more positive, which means our energy is higher, and our reaction will be better.

8.There are No Ordinary Moments:
The past only exists in our memory. The future only exists as our expectation. The only time that really exists is NOW. It is a precious moment and we should treat every single moment as special and live it to the full. By being in the present, we have presence. To live in the now the conscious mind should be quiet and you must focus totally on what you are doing, not what you are going to be doing next week, or what you are going to have for lunch.

9.There are No Limits:
The only limits we have are those we place upon ourselves, or others place upon us. To this end, we should avoid being put in a pigeonhole and labelled by others. If someone views a dog as being vicious, then it is more likely to be vicious. We should hold no expectations of others, and let them be themselves, just as we should be ourselves.

10.Action not Reaction:
If we are tickled, our reaction is to laugh. We should be at a state where we do not react in a situation, but act. Reaction is unconscious, whereas Action is conscious. We should not let past influences affect our actions, e.g. if we were once bitten by a dog, when we next meet a dog, we should not let the past bite affect how we act towards it. There are times to act, as well as times to be still. By living in the present and having control of the conscious mind, we can better direct our action.

11.Positivity Rules:
Negative thoughts attract negative events and drain our energy. Positive thoughts attract positive events and increase our energy. To this end, we should look at our thoughts and the events which happen to us in a positive light, realising negative thoughts for what they are and releasing them.

12.Posture, Pose & Breathing:
Energy flows through the body, as it flows through all things. If the posture and pose are bad, the energy can not flow cleanly and causes blockages, which manifest as pain or illness. We breathe in energy from the world around us. Therefore, our breaths should be deep and full, coming from the bottom of the belly, and not the chest. This enables us to maximise our energy. Deep breathing helps relax us. When we are stressed, angry or afraid our breathing changes and becomes shallow and faster. By consciously controlling our breathing and keeping it deep and even, we can release the stress, anger or fear, enabling us to act consciously in the situation.

13.Everything in Balance:
The universe exists in a state of balance, as should we. We can do anything we wish, but should always do it to moderation, never to excess. Should we do things to excess, then they can become addictive, which drains energy and may become negative. Being balanced allows us to act better in situations. If we are sat on the fence, so to speak, we can jump off either way should we desire to.

14.Intent is Action:
You can intend to do anything, and your intent is important. However, unless the intent is followed with action, then the intent is nothing. As an example. I may intend to get fit, but spend all my time sat in front of the TV eating pizza and drinking cola. I have my intention, but my actions do not confirm or create the intention. Therefore, if you intend something, do it, don't just talk about it. Action turns knowledge into wisdom.

15.Freedom of Choice:
We all have free will, and can choose to do anything we wish. There is no situation where we do not have choice. It may appear that we do not, but there are always options, if we have the courage and strength to take them. We just have to have the courage of conviction to make the decisions.

16.Change Happens:
Change is continuous and is always happening around us. We can not actually perceive change, but can see the end result of it. Change is not a bad thing nor is it to be feared. Through change we can grow and go forwards.

17.Taking Responsibility:
Our actions cause a reaction - it is a law of nature. We have to be aware of our actions and take responsibility for them and for the consequences of them. It is no good doing something and then saying you did not mean to do it. Had you not meant to do it, you would not have done it. By taking responsibility for our actions, so we can take back our power and freedom to choose. We have to accept that no one will live for us, and that sometimes our actions will cause others, or ourselves, a measure of discomfort. Remember though, that discomfort is one way of helping us grow and to show us where changes need to be made.

18.One Step at a Time:
To get to any goal, break it down into a number of small steps. If you have many small successes, then this will lead to a big success. If you aim for a big success straight off, you may fail. Remember that a journey towards any destination starts with a single step, and then a second and a third, and as many as required until you reach that destination. Remember to reward and praise yourself for your successes, however small they are. By acknowledging them, you increase your power and will to succeed, strengthening your belief in yourself.

19.Judgement:
We have no right to judge another for their words, thoughts or deeds. They have the freedom of choice to do as they please and act as they wish, just as we do. We are in no position to judge anyone, as we are imperfect ourselves. It is easily done, for example, you see a big man with tattoo's, a skinhead and wearing leather, and the automatic assumption is that he is trouble. He may be a florist for all we know. This colours our judgement of people and changes how we act towards them. By having no preconceptions of other people, we can interact better with them, and perhaps make a new friend.

20.Integrity:
Integrity is all about how we act when no one is looking. We must live to our own standards and should not judge others by them. This is about living in line with our highest vision despite urges to the contrary.

21.Air Your Doubts:
By airing your doubts, fears, and worries, by looking at them and seeing them for what they are, so you can conquer them and rid yourself of them forever. By refusing to confront them, so they gain power over you, and become even more deeply rooted. After you realise what they are - release them.

22.Failure:
It is very rare for us to fail. We only ever choose to stop trying. That is us exercising our free will. We can stop trying any time we wish, but those that succeed never stop until they get to their goal. Success often does not come easy, and does require work and effort from us. You will find that most 'overnight successes' have been working hard for that success for many years. Failure is not something to be feared or worried about, because we can never fail! Everything we do, no matter whether we view it as a success or failure is a valuable lesson for us to learn. By looking at a perceived failure as a valuable lesson, it no longer feels as bad. The only true failure is not learning the lessons our mistakes teach us.

23.The Ongoing Journey:
Our journey of exploration through life never, ever stops. The destination is not the reward or the goal. The journey to the destination is the goal itself.

24.Don't Mind:
If we take an objective view of our mind, then we can see that lots of thoughts drift through it, many of which we are unaware of. A sad, angry or fearful thought may drift up from the sub-conscious and change how we feel for no apparent reason. We must take control of the mind through tools such as meditation, and become aware of these thoughts and realise them for what they are. Then, we can let them go and stay relaxed and centred. By consciously focussing on our breathing, and keeping it deep and even, we can help to release these negative thoughts.

25.Emotions:
Emotions come and go. They flow through us all the time, often without us even realising. Many of us do not express our emotions because we feel we have to "Be manly" or "Be responsible" or "Be cool". When we feel the negative emotions, we can feel our bodies tense. If we do not express these emotions when we feel them, the tension is stored within our bodies. Having emotions is not to be feared and should be celebrated. When you feel an emotion - express it! If you are happy - smile and laugh, if you are sad cry. Expressing your emotions releases the tension they give, and helps you live more fully in the here and now. Once you have expressed an emotion, it is gone and will not return with the same force for that situation. If we refuse to express them and store the emotions up, then, like damming a fast river, eventually the water level will rise too high if we do not provide it with an outlet.

26.Play:
As children, we play exuberantly. We have fun, enjoy ourselves and have lots of energy. Then something happens, we grow up, and we no longer play believing that adults have to be adult and they don't play. Playing is one of our greatest sources of pleasure. It takes many forms, from sport to games to laughing and joking with friends. Playing increases our energy and makes us more positive. It makes those around us more positive and generally lifts the spirits of all involved. There are times to be serious, yes, but there are times to play too, and that is what we must not forget.

Rei Ki - What the Words Mean

Rei: Spiritual Wisdom

Mrs. Hawayo Takata, who introduced Reiki to the West, said the word Rei means universal and this is the definition most have accepted. However, Mrs. Takata also indicated that this interpretation is a very general one. The kanji ideograms have many levels of meaning. They vary from the mundane to the highly esoteric. So while it is true that Rei can be interpreted as universal, meaning that it is present everywhere, this level of interpretation really doesn't add to our understanding of Reiki.

Research into the esoteric meaning of the Japanese kanji character for Rei has given a much deeper understanding of this ideogram. The word Rei as it is used in Reiki is more accurately interpreted to mean supernatural knowledge or spiritual consciousness. This is the wisdom that comes from God or the Higher Self. This is the God-Consciousness which is all knowing. It understands each person completely. It knows the cause of all problems and difficulties and knows what to do to heal them.

Ki: The Life Force

Ki means the same as Chi in Chinese, Prana in Sanskrit and Ti or Ki in Hawaiian. It has also been called, odic force, orgone, and bioplasma. It has been given many other names by the various cultures that have been aware of it.

Ki is the life force. It is also called the vital life force or the universal life force. This is the nonphysical energy that animates all living things. As long as something is alive, it has life force circulating through it and surrounding it; when it dies, the life force departs.

If your life force is low, or if there is a restriction in its flow, you will be more vulnerable to illness. When it is high, and flowing freely, you are less likely to get sick. Life force plays an important role in everything we do. It animates the body and also is the primary energy of our emotions, thoughts and spiritual life.

The Chinese place great importance on the life force or what they call Chi. They have studied it for thousands of years and have discovered there are many different kinds of Chi. The "Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine" which is over 4,000 years old, lists thirty-two different kinds of Chi or Ki.

Ki is used by martial artists in their physical training and mental development. It is used in meditative breathing exercises called Pranayama, and by the shamans of all cultures for divination, psychic awareness, manifestation and healing. Ki is the nonphysical energy used by all healers. Ki is present all around us and can be accumulated and guided by the mind.

Reiki: Spiritually Guided Life Force Energy

It is the God-consciousness called Rei that guides the life force called Ki in the practice we call Reiki. Therefore, Reiki can be defined as spiritually guided life force energy. This is a meaningful interpretation of the word Reiki. It more closely describes the experience most people have of it; Reiki guiding itself with its own wisdom, and being unresponsive to the direction of the practitioner.

Decisions Decisions

This experience we call life is filled to the brim with decisions. During every waking moment, we are faced with more choices than we can possibly comprehend.

We are often simi-or un-conscious of the threads of life we spin with each thought or direction of thought our minds take. Some decisions are merely reactionary; some are carefully and methodically made. Some major resolutions are brought about by a culmination of seemingly inconsequential decisions and most have small conclusions entertwined in their process.

All that we are and have experienced is embodied in every single decision we make and each decision creates a new experience. Until we make any decision, we have no real idea of what the experience will be. Thus, we never really make mistakes; we only create experiences we either like or dislike.

What does that have to do with health, healing and Reiki?

Ultimately, all decisions direct our lives as to whether or not we are going to get sick with certain diseases, and to a degree, whether we are going to place ourselves in positions that could lead to accidents, or be in environments where catastrophes can happen...

... I am so sorry to do this to you, but this post has been moved to my new website, Two Feathers Reiki, hosted at shirleytwofeathers.com, and can be found in its entirety here: Decisions Decisions
